Holiday Flatfile Sale (with Batcave Variant APs!)

Ready for the annual microcosmicmedia Holiday Flatfile Sale? Let's do it Thursday December 13 at 3PM EST. Rummaging around in the archives after the craziness of 2012... this should be fun.

ALSO: I'll be finally putting up the BATCAVE Sideshow Variant APs up at that time.
I have very few to sell so don't be late! I'll also have a couple of 2-print matching sets available as well (regular + variant).

Any questions let me know- see you then-

There's a story on a thimble, on a dimple, on a pea... and it's absolutely true until the end...

Hello friends-  No pitiful excuses for the long-delayed update, other than to say I've been using my time wisely (if that means getting lots of stuff done behind the scenes).

True to form, I've already overextended myself a bit in first half of 2013; just too many cool projects I can't say no to, even when it would benefit sanity. These include a couple of Mondo-related things, some things I can't talk about, and then some other things I can't talk about (yes, NDAs make for bad sharing ).

The biggest news thing on a personal front is a 2-person show happening sometime next year-- TONS of art print goodness in the works for that. I've also decided to finally offer a limited number of  art print subscription for 2013 as well- really looking forward to getting back to regular art print releases. I've avoided subscriptions in the past since it was too tough to predict what commercial jobs I'd be doing at any given point, and how many prints would come out within a certain timeframe, etc. However, 2013 should be much different; for example, more releases are planned for just the one show than in all of  '12! I'm excited...
Still working out the subscription details but I'll post 'em (and small previews of a few future releases) asap.

My early resolution is to update/post/tweet more-- and I mean it this time. Really.

One of the strangest tales ever told...

How do you do? It would be a little unkind to present these pictures without just a word of friendly warning.

I think they will thrill you. They may shock you. They might even - horrify you. So if any of you feel that you do not care to subject your nerves to such a strain, now's your chance to - uh, well, we warned you.

Out of the Loop...

Hey all, my apologies if you've been trying to reach me the past week; I had to travel due to family matter and was unable to answer any mail or inquiries. To make matters worse, a recent batch of email messages ended up  'unretrievable' according to my service provider, so if you've sent me a mail since last Tuesday please feel free to resend as I may not have received it. Thanks in advance for your patience as I play catch up getting the remaining tubes out the door.

SHIPPING UPDATE:  Started shipping out the Fortress and Batcave AP orders and hope to have them all out by the end of this week (11/16).

Good to be home. -JC

New print for Mondo - "The Bat Cave"

Hello friends-

Many of you have seen this one already, but I can finally post it here. Worked with my friends at Mondo to create their latest DC-licensed print titled "The Batcave." The print will go on sale at the Mondotees site on Thursday, August 30 at a random time.

Since it's never a good idea to try to explain away artistic choices, of course I wrote a long-winded blurb doing just that for the Mondo blog.

Here's the intro:
Any time you are assigned the task of reinterpreting an iconic setting with a long established history, it can be intimidating. You begin knowing how passionate fans are about the universe, and that many of them have their own definitive idea of what the Batcave looks like.
Do you hew closely to the established comic/tv/movie canon, or take some chances to create something new? Do you keep it a clinical, cross-section rendering, or attempt to go deeper and tell some kind of narrative within the scene? For our take on the Batcave, we decided on another option: trying all of the above...
It goes on like that for a while, so if you can stand to read the entire thing head over to the Mondo blog.

Madness of an architect...

Sitting here for an hour trying to write something useful about an impending print release. Much easier to draw 'em than explain 'em.

Basically it will be the tale of how we attempt to tell an iconic, complex narrative in 2 screenprinted panels, only changing minor staging between the two... astoundingly, I think it worked out.

More to come soon.-JC

Crazy 4 Cult NYC tonight!

Hello friends-

Just a heads up for all those in the area... Gallery1988's Pop Up gallery for Crazy 4 Cult NYC is opening tonight!

UPDATE: All the artwork from the show is available here at G88's site.

I visited the space just yesterday and was blown away by the quality of work in this show.I ended up doing a 1/1 instead of a screenprint for this one, from a long forgotten mainstream movie so widely panned it ended up turning 'cult'.

Hope some of you can make it down, it's gonna be a special one.-JC

Mondo Lord of the Rings art print set- AP sale details

Hey my copies of the Mondo Lord of the Rings SDCC prints have arrived! Yep. The sets sold out in San Diego but I'll be putting my small AP batch for sale here on the blog sometime this afternoon EST (Thursday the 26th.).

I will also also try to get my s/n AP copies of Dragonslayer up for sale as the same time, as some LOTR fans may be interested in that one as well.

Where to go at sale time?

At the sale time I'll make a new blog post complete with 'ADD to CART' paypal buttons. It's important to note that you can't just refresh this post or you won't see it pop up. Instead, watch/refresh the main blog page to see new posts when they go live.

I'm going to keep the exact sale time random because I using paypal buttons for the sale and have very few sets available. Unfortunately it's the only practical way to avoid purchase button overload (ie large oversells). And I really loathe writing refund emails.. a lot.

I'll try to add more closeup shots to this post before the sale happens, in case some of you haven't seen the actual printed matter yet (D&L did a killer job of course).
Hope to see some of you back here this afternoon.

New prints for Mondo - Lord of the Rings Trilogy Art Print set

Thank Tolkien, it's finally Comic Con Saturday! Can at last show you the Lord of the Rings Trilogy art print set I've been working on for Mondo. Such an honor to be able to work on these, as I have such a love for the books and the films (all of 'em!)

The color breakdown of the individual prints is: Fellowship of the Ring- 9 colors; Two Towers- 8 colors; Return of the King- 9 colors. All printed by D&L Screenprinting.
Hopefully I'll be able to post some detail shots soon, been sorta a crazy day... EDIT here are a few nicely washed out ones-

 cheers everyone.-JC

In case you missed it...

Only 1 day to Comic Con madness. Exciting.

Couldn't make it out there this year, but here's the info on Mondo's booth, should be lots of additional details about the releases coming later in the week. You may want to keep an eye out for that.

Talk to you all soon.-JC

The sun...it burns...

Just realized I'll probably have 5 things released in July, maybe 6 if planets align. No titles or credits, just art prints of one sort or another. Won't say much more because I'll screw up and give it away, but can add that I've been getting to play with a bunch of  iconic characters- can't wait to show you guys all of it.

For those asking- yes should have Dragonslayer artist copies available in the next few weeks. My own art print had to be pushed back into July as well (been waiting to print this one for months but SDCC prep has taken over my life lately). It's summer-themed, so the timing should work better anyway.

Promise to share news/previews etc. as soon as I can (psst, follow my twitter).

New print - "Dragonslayer"

Worked with the fine folks at Mondo to produce a new poster for a true favorite from my childhood. Sure, there have been many dragons presented with more CG polish and sheen, but for me Vermithrax Pejorative still stands as one of the best creature designs of all time.

Phil Tippett, the legendary effects wizard who created a new form of character animation to bring Vermithrax to life, will be at a special screening / "QnA" at the Alamo this Thursday. In fact, Mr. Tippett's new stop motion film MAD GOD just surpassed it's Kickstarter goal of $40k this afternoon. Can't wait to what they do with the project.
Get more info on the Mondo blog.

Hope everyone attending the screening enjoys the movie (and the print). I'll be there in spirit, sailing the Lake of Fire...

The waiting is the hardest part..

Hello friends-

May is already half over, how does that happen? Excited to share some of what I've been working on soon--just gotta wait a few more days (you've heard that before, I'm serious this time). It's been tough to keep my mouth shut, but so far so good. All respect to Petty- the waiting is pretty unpleasant, but the damn secrecy is the hardest part.

In a bit of 'behind the scenes' news:  Just received approval on another project I was convinced was not going to see the light of day (no scandal, just random stuff out of our control). Very glad to report I was dead wrong, and it's going to print soon. Out of anything so far, this one will no doubt generate the most discussion.. will make more sense when you see it.

Most importantly- thanks again for hanging in there with me through long stretches without any exciting news (found that drawing all night makes me lose track of time in a very troubling way). No excuse though, I'm going to make a renewed effort to update more often.

Until then.. eye of the tiger, my friends (it's the thrill of the fight.)

New Print- "The Dark Lines"

Hello again my friends-

My piece for the Gallery 1988 Hitchcock show is an homage to one of the most chilling moments A.H. ever put on film, from the 1945 psychological thriller 'Spellbound'.

Gregory Peck's stance and hand position in this reveal always struck me as weirdly unnatural and creepy; that one shot perfectly shifted the tone as the story morphs from a romantic lark into a bizarre 'journey of the mind'. Ingrid Bergman lies just out of frame and seems destined to have bad things happen to her; Hitchcock highlights Peck  and his murderous (or is it confused?) stare as he looms over the bed, razor glinting in moonlight pouring through the windows.

If you haven't seen 'Spellbound', I recommend it... it even has a dream sequence partly designed by Salvador Dali, which is sort of amazing even if it wasn't in a Hitchock story.

Calm before the storm...

Hello friends,
Just wanted to say hello, and answer a few common questions I've been getting-

- Yes, we're alive.
- Yes, more releases coming (very soon I'm told).
- Yes, the next microcosmicmedia art print is nearly done, coming in May.
- Yes, may offer a small subscription in the summer- planning on releasing a bunch of art prints during the second half of the year, but don't worry about it yet.. I'll make all the info public asap when I figure it out.
- Yes, I pinch myself daily when ruminating on the coolness of the projects I've been working on.. not a metaphor btw, I seriously leave marks...

As frustrating as it is to have to wait to share previews/info, someone reminded me recently that it always takes much longer to do things the 'official' way.. hopefully some people still care about that stuff (anyone?). Thanks all for hanging in there with me.. as soon as I possibly can, I'll spill all you need to know about the next release.

I'll leave you with a few pics of interesting LPs, found in a box thought lost long ago... some real gems in there, wanted to share a few of the more bizarre/cool/unexpected ones...
-JC

No, didn't buy these at time of release! I hope (most of) you know who these guys are.

I wonder if the 'avid fan' got tickets?

As a child, couldn't figure out why they sounded a little 'off'!

The actual set that started my fascination with illustration...

Just one of the (large!) vibrant panels inside...
